Mr. N64's Summary of MGS2's Story and Play Mechanics

Story:
As the game begins, you play Solid Snake as he tries to get pictures proving the existence of a new Metal Gear prototype. Once that is achieved, Snake fades into the background as the player controls Raiden on a mission that takes place 2 years later.

Note: On the "Special" menu screen you can read several accounts of the events of the first game. After finishing each story, a new one will become available. The last story is several hundred screens long, but it accurately details everything from the first game.
