Mr. N64's Summary of Mission: Impossible's Story and Play Mechanics

Story:


If you're expecting to play through the movie plot, guess again. While some of the scenes and objectives are similar to the movie, they are more different than they are similar. Ocean's rewriting of the Mission: Impossible plot is tighter than Rare's rewriting of Goldeneye's plot, but the story still doesn't flow as smoothly as it could.


Play mechanics:


Here's a summary of Mission: Impossible's Play Modes and Controls:

Play Mode Description
One-player Play the game with either Possible or Impossible difficulties.

Button Action
Control Stick Move your character. In the Computer Terminal level, the Control Stick is used to rotate and swing Ethan.
Control Pad Rotates the camera around Ethan (useful to check around corners). In the Computer Terminal level, the C Buttons move the camera.
A Jump. When the screen on the walkie-talkie in the corner of your TV lights up, press A to perform the indicated action (talk, open door, receive message). In the Computer Terminal level, A moves Ethan down.
B Brings up the on-screen, real-time inventory menu. To select a weapon, keep pressing B until the weapon you want is selected, and then press A to confirm. To select an item (from the vertical icons) press B to bring up the inventory and then press Bottom C until the item you want is selected. Then press A to use the item. In the Computer Terminal level, B moves Ethan up. In a sniper level, B switches between available snipers.
Top C Zoom in when aiming (varies by weapon).
Bottom C Duck.
Left C Sidestep left while aiming (while pressing R).
Right C Sidestep right while aiming.
Z Fire weapon or throw a punch.
R Hold and use the control stick to aim. In a sniper level, holding R allows for more precise movement of the crosshairs.
L Switch camera modes (from trailing Ethan to a 3/4 perspective).
Start Pause and bring up mission status/briefing menu.
