HUMOR
Graham Chapman/ Monty Python
- Graham
Crackers : Fuzzy Memories, Silly Bits, and Outright Lies by Graham
Chapman, Jim Yoakum (Compiler). Ordinarily I limit my reviews to those
books that I have actually read, but in this case I have chosen to make
an exception to policy. Mr. Yoakum assures me that the book is quite good
and that I may cheerfully stuff the aforementioned policy.
- The
Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus : All the Words (Volume I) As
it says on the back cover, "Almost certainly nominated for something
somewhere". Can't remember the words to "The Lumberjack Song"?
Pick up a copy of volume one! The complete scripts from the first twenty-three
episodes of the Monty Python series from the BBC. There simply is no way
to adequately describe such delights as flying sheep, owl-stretching time,
policemen make wonderful friends, Hell's Grannies, and the death of Mary
Queen of Scots. If you don't wet yourself reading this book, you're probably
dead.
- The
Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus : All the Words (Volume II) "Winner
of the 1989 PYTHON PRIZE for their own books". The mayhem continues
in volume two which contains the original scripts from the second twenty-two
episodes. The Fish-slapping dance, Spot the Looney, Buying an Ant, the
Unexploded Scotsman, and International Wife-swapping. If you manage to
survive the first book, this one will finish you off.
P.J. O'Rourke
P.J. O'Rourke is truly one of a kind. He views the world
in the same way that many folks do, however, he has a genius for translating
his observations into words that are gritty, precise, acrid, eloquent,
humorous, and poetic all at the same time. If you enjoyed "Rush Limbaugh
is a Big, Fat Idiot", always check the box on your tax return to contribute
to the presidential election fund, or feel that the biggest threat that
the U.S. military is likely to face concerns harassment or homosexuality,
you will not enjoy anything that he has to say.
- Age
and Guile Beat Youth, Innocence, and a Bad Haircut
- All
the Trouble in the World : P.J. discusses "The Lighter Side of
Overpopulation, Famine, Ecological Disaster, Ethnic Hatred, Plague, and
Poverty" as well as other "fashionable worries". His travels
to Somalia, the Amazon, Rio, the former Yugoslavia, Haiti, Bangladesh,
Thailand, Czechoslovakia, and Vietnam allow him to speak with some authority
on the subjects.
- The
Bachelor Home Companion : A Practical Guide to Keeping House Like a
Pig."Endust doesn't actually 'end dust,' it just makes everything
in your house stickier than it is already. However, it will turn the cat
into a carpet sweeper." "How often does a house need to be cleaned
anyway? As a general rule, once every girlfriend. After that, she can get
to know the real you." If you have ever been a bachelor (or dated
one), you will probably be able to relate.
- The
Enemies List
- Give
War a Chance : Accounts of Mankind's Struggle Against Tyranny, Injustice
and Alcohol-Free Beer
- Republican
Party Reptile : Essays and Outrages
- Parliament
of Whores: A Lone Humorist Attempts to Explain the Entire U.S. Government
Douglas Adams
Douglas Adams has written for the BBC (radio and television)
and has had nearly as many odd jobs as I have. His books have sold over
8,000,000 copies worldwide and the original Hitchhiker's trilogy was made
into a TV series, several computer games, tapes, radio shows, and probably
homes for generations of birds. His oddly effective sense of timing and
playful use of language is always delightful.
The Hitchhiker's Guide Trilogy (Curiously enough, there are five).
- The
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Our hero is Arthur Dent, the only
survivor of Earth's untimely demise to make way for a hyperspace bypass,
who travels throughout the universe searching for meaning and maybe a cup
of tea. Arthur is accompanied by his friend Ford Prefect, a staff reporter
for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a wholly remarkable book.
- The
Restaurant at the End of the Universe. At the end of time, opposite
the Big Bang Burger Bar, lies The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.
Arthur and Ford continue their quest accompanied by Trillian, the depressed
android Marvin, and Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two-headed, three-armed ex-president
of the galaxy.
- Life,
the Universe and Everything. The discovery that the earth has been
nothing more than a super-computer designed to find the answer to the ultimate
question, leaves Arthur a bit depressed. The fact that the designers, common
laboratory mice, were the most intelligent beings on earth doesn't help.
- So
Long and Thanks for All the Fish. What the dolphins (the second most
intelligent creatures) said as they were leaving Earth just before the
Vogon Constructor Fleet... it all gets somewhat muddled here, but you get
the point.
- Mostly
Harmless. Round and round we go again, is this the end of the trilogy?
Who knows?
