"Why is the Ocean so Near the Shore", Billy Murray - Victor 17554-B (02/13/1914) This weeks theme: Women's Suffrage I realized I've played these before but with the election coming up next Tuesday I figure they're worth another spin. All three mention Women's Suffrage at least in passing. All three mock it. "... teach the girlies how to vote ..." It's hard to believe that half of the adult population of the United States used to be denied the right to vote. Women couldn't vote for president until 1920 - within the life time of some people still alive today! Not that long ago. Oops! then they picked Warren G. Harding - one of our worst presidents ever - who managed to escape the Teapot Dome Scandal by dying in office. My Mother remembered the 1920 election, she was 10 at the time, and said all the women voted for Harding because he was so handsome. Okay, I don't get it either. The Suffrage movement was much more radical/militant in Britain before WWI. Like Emmeline Pankhurst.
