This week's theme: famous WWI songs

I think these are the three most famous songs to come out of WWI.

This is the most famous version of "Tipperary", sung by the great John 
McCormack. I think of him as the Bing Crosby of WWI. He was that famous in 
his day. It isn't actually a war song, having been popularized before the 
war, but it became very popular during the war.

November 11, "Veteran's Day" was originally "Armistice Day" marking the 
ceasefire which ended WWI. The war didn't officially end until the Treaty of 
Versailles on June 28, 1919. The U.S. Senate rejected that treaty and we 
signed our own separate peace with Germany on November 11, 1921. Peace with 
Austria was official on November 22, 1921, Hungary on December 17, 1921, 
Turkey had been on August 10, 1920.

In the 1960s they made a musical stringing a whole bunch of British WWI 
songs together under the title of one of them, "Oh! What a Lovely War".

The total number of military and civilian casualties in World War One, was 
around 40 million. There were 20 million deaths and 21 million wounded. The 
total number of deaths includes 9.7 million military personnel and about 10 
million civilians.

It was the worst catastrophe to befall the human race before WWII, which was 
even worse. WWII estimates are 60 million dead - possibly as high as 80 
million.

WWI was anything but a "Lovely War".
