“We’ll Meet Again”, Vera Lynn


This week's theme: Vera Lynn

I'm not sure what made me think of her, I don't have any of her records, 
these are all off the web, but whatever.

She was a major singing star in Britain during World War Two.

It seems like all her songs are sad but with a ray of optimism - well, in a 
British "keep a stiff upper lip" sort of way anyway.

Her songs are maybe mostly interesting for historical reasons but I do find 
them haunting in a way. She captures the universal sadness of wartime 
separation.

I suspect their popularity back then reflects the true mood of the civilian 
population during the war. I remember growing up during the Viet Nam War, 
there was always a pall over the country. The war was always a nagging 
headache in the back of your mind that tainted everything else. I'm sure 
that would have been even stronger during WWII.

I remember her songs made a comeback in Britain during the Falkland Islands 
War (1982), I guess they reflect universal and timeless feelings.


"Dame Vera" just turned 101 years old on March 20, 2018.


You might remember her 1953 remake of “We’ll Meet Again”. It was used at the 
end of the movie "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and
