07/22/2021 "Watch World War Three on Pay TV", Crown City Four (1960) This week's theme: Thermonuclear War A real blast from the past! - (sorry about that :-) You think it's hot now ... Watch World War Three (On Pay TV) lyrics https://genius.com/The-crown-city-four-watch-world-war-three-on-pay-tv-lyrics *************************************************** This 1960 song predates the later Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) and the TV evening news coverage of Viet Nam War. It reminds me more of the First Gulf War (1991). That wasn't WW3 but it had 24/7 Cable News coverage. It established CNN as major news source and kept us all glued to the tube to watch it. *************************************************** I don't remember having cable (pay TV) here in Minnesota before the early 1980s but they evidently had it in Southern California going back to the 1950s History of Cable https://calcable.org/learn/history-of-cable/ *************************************************** Famous People mentioned in this song: *************************************************** Bishop Sheen hosted the first prime time religious TV show "Life Is Worth Living" (1952 to 1957). Murrow "I have an old-fashioned belief that Americans like to make up their own minds on the basis of all available information." - Edward R. Murrow *************************************************** My Dad used to wage Nuclear War in the 1950's (defensively) http://www.winternet.com/~swezeyt/fun/Atest.htm *************************************************** This was no joke, people used to be really worried about nuclear war. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor was still fresh in my parents generation's minds. Growing up in the 1960s I thought we'd have a nuclear war by 1975, or so, at the latest. Fortunately WW3 hasn't happened yet, but nothing has really changed since 1960. Today we're still only about a half hour flight time of a Russian ICBM ("Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile") away from it, with no real defense against it. This hasn't really gone away. I guess we just got tired of being scared all the time. Sleep tight America :-) *************************************************** Where's the best place to be during a nuclear attack? Anywhere where you can say "What was that?" - Nipsey Russell *************************************************** Ya, the good old days ... And remember to "duck and cover" when you see that flash :-) --Tom Swezey "Crawl out Through the Fallout", Sheldon Allman (1960) Sheldon Allman From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheldon_Allman People might not remember what "fallout" is. After a nuclear blast a lot of dust and crud gets blown up into the atmosphere, becomes mixed with radioactive crud from the bomb and rains down over a wider area than just the blast, poisoning everything with radioactivity. People used to be encouraged to build "fallout shelters" in their basements and stock them with food and water. That way if they survived the nuclear blast they wouldn't be poisoned by the "fallout". I didn't know anybody that actually had a "fallout shelter" but who knows - maybe. I remember hearing back then, that there was a big brush fire in California and all the plastic in all the fallout shelters melted from the heat - proving they were useless as a bomb shelter - no one would have survived the heat. ...
