I thought I was watching a "reboot" of that classic, gem of a daytime TV quiz show, "Queen for a Day" (1940s-1960s), but I wasn't. I don't know if you remember that show, but each weekday they would have four women contestants, each with a horrible sob story about how desperately miserable their life was. Things like, their kid had some terrible disease that was bankrupting their family while they were desperately trying to get treatment for him. Then they would ask her what she wanted most if she were chosen "Queen for a Day". They'd usually answer with something crazy like "our family needs a new toaster, but we can't afford one - so I'd really like to get one of those". Anyway, the audience would vote, by applause meter, as to who had the sobiest sob story and she was then crowned "Queen for a Day" and would wear a fancy robe and a crown and get a bunch of flowers. Plus she'd get a stack of prizes like a new washer/dryer and a toaster and stuff like that. (I don't remember what the three losers got - but I don't think it was much :-) Also, it's not exactly clear to me how a new dinette set was suppose to help the winner with her problem. "Would YOU -- Like to BE -- QUEEN for a day?" Me? Nah - but then I'm not a 1950s housewife :-) ******************************************** Queen for a Day From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_for_a_Day Thanks to YouTube you can experience this yourself :-) Queen for a Day - Voting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVoaKJbkE-Y History of Queen For A Day - Part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AJ1EeP8vLk History of Queen For A Day - Part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWcjzOMLEho Queen for a Day - Episode #4 | Jack Bailey, Gene Baker, Jeanne Cagney https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9QJApyljCw QUEEN FOR A DAY THE MUSICAL - TEASER #1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5Tu4S_xvU4 QUEEN FOR A DAY THE MUSICAL - SIZZLE REEL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3ZvFEY3ExU QUEEN FOR A DAY THE MUSICAL - SHOW MONTAGE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4JItXUKzao I think I'm going to start using the royal "we".
