When I was in ninth grade, my junior high school band played a medley of songs from Oklahoma. It was our theme for the concert and we were suppose to dress up in western garb. So my Mother took me to J.C. Penney's to buy a pair of blue jeans. Blue jeans were just work clothes back then, they hadn't started to catch on yet as a popular style. Anyway, there was only one pair left and they were a little too big but we bought them anyway. I remember the salesman saying that there weren't many jeans around because the government was buying up all that material for the military. It's the only "war time shortage" I remember encountering during the Vietnam War era.
