05/05/2023 ****************************** This week's theme: Cinco de Mayo I see where Cinco de Mayo falls on May 5 this year. (Okay - silly joke - but I still like it :-) Like most Americans I know virtually NOTHING about Mexican history - or Canadian history either for that matter. I "Remember the Alamo" - thanks to that old John Wayne movie. And I know we had a war with Mexico where we grabbed about 1/3 of their country - that's why all the cities in the Southwest have Spanish names like Santa Fe, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco - but I'm not sure when that was exactly. Anyway, Cinco de Mayo commemorates a Mexican victory over the French. Wait - the French? Where did they come from? Ya, ya, I know, France - that's not what I meant. ****************************** When I was a kid, there weren't any Mexican restaurants here in Minnesota. I remember on a trip to California, in 1970, seeing a taco stand with "tacos", "burritos" and "enchiladas" written all over it and I had no idea what any of those were. Of course I'd never had Brussels sprouts by then either :-) ****************************** I read somewhere, a long time ago, that most illegal aliens here in Minnesota are actually Canadians not Mexicans. They sneak across the border, Eh? And blend right in, Eh? I mean, you can't really tell who is one, Eh? And who isn't, Eh? It could be anybody, Eh? ****************************** Battle of the Alamo (1836) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Alamo Mexican–American War (1846-1848) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican%E2%80%93American_War Cinco de Mayo (Battle of Puebla 1862) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo Stay Jazzed! --Tom Swezey ...
