01/02/2022 ********************** "Just a Gigolo", Bing Crosby (1931) They say the first day back to work after the holidays is the most depressing day of the year. So I thought a bonus Hit of the Week song was in order to help bring a little joy into your drab, wretched lives :-) ******** A few years ago I read somewhere that they recommended that people make a radical career change in mid life - not because they have to, but just to juice things up. Evidently they felt that flipping from one drab, dead end job to a new drab dead end job is an improvement. Anyway, they said on the news a lot of people are doing that now as the Covid pandemic winds down. I, myself, have never felt the need to do that. Working in the computer industry things change quite a bit every five years or so and almost totally every ten. It's quite different today from when I first started. But anyway I thought it might be fun to ask, what career WOULD I flip to if I were to do that. Like most technical people, I'm a real "people person" - that's why I went into Software Engineering in the first place (although I might have been somewhat misinformed about that). Anyway, it would have to be something like that. ********* A while back there was a guy in the news named Jeffrey Epstein. He was a "procurer" - that sounds so much nicer that "p*mp" or "wh*remonger" don't you think? Anyway, THAT sounds like an interesting line of work to be in. He made a lot of money and got to meet a lot of rich and famous people, like Prince Andrew, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton and Bill Gates. The trouble is, I wouldn't know how to get started in something like that. I mean, in software development you need to have some formal training, either college or at least a technical school - but I don't remember seeing any classes in "procurement" when I went to the U - maybe they were over in the business school - I wasn't really looking for that when I went there. Considering it's the "world's oldest profession", you'd think there would be a more defined, educational pathway so that a young person who might be interested in pursuing a career in that field would know how to get started in it. ************ I saw a movie once where a procurer kept his girls in line and dependent on him by getting them all heavily addicted to narcotics. I don't know ... I bet the drugs I would need are probably illegal in Minnesota, and I'd have to deal with some rather unsavory characters to get them. In another movie, the procurer would beat up one of the girls from time to time to scare the others to keep them in line. But I don't know about that either - I've never hit a woman before - and frankly I think some of these chicks could probably beat the crap out of me if I tried something like that - this could all backfire horribly on me. Maybe "procurement" isn't such a great job after all. ************ Of course, I could be just a "gigolo". I worked my way through college doing that, but it's so humiliating. The first hundred or so are the hardest and ... Wait a minute - I never did THAT! I must have dreamed that in some weird, twisted nightmare. Although, it all sounds so glamorous the way Bing is singing about it. ************ Maybe I'm not such a "people person" after all. Although, being a Software Engineer is a lot like being a "gigolo" - I mean people pay me for my body - well the "brain" part of my body anyway. So it's kinda the same thing, ... sorta, ... a little, ... isn't it? - Okay maybe not. Ya, I think maybe I'll just stick with being a Software Engineer :-) ************ Here's a real blast from the 1980s :-) David Lee Roth - Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody (1985) (Music Video - Dave TV Version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ui-zBq-f5XA David Lee Roth From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Lee_Roth Stay Jazzed! --Tom Swezey --
