McCarthy Beach Folkswalk Saturday, August 7 Co-sponsored by: McCarthy Beach State Park Registration at the Hiking Trail Parking lot on St. Louis County 501. You may start after 10 a.m. and finish by 6 p.m. Note on road condition: The road to the registration area is a dirt road with some low areas ... low clearance vehicles are not recommended. The trail is 10K and the three loops will go on the Big Hole Trail, the North Pickerel Lake loop and the Ridge Trail. Rating: 3+. The Award is a leather bird pin featuring the Great Horned Owl mounted on an embossed ribbon. Pre-registration is recommended and the deadline for pre-registration is July 15. Cost of the award is $8; IVV credit only is $3; walk only is $2. An additional $1 charge if we have to mail award. Water and restrooms are available at the start/finish area. How to get there: The park is located in St. Louis County near Hibbing. Take US Highway 169 north out of Hibbing to St. Louis County Road 5. Follow this county road about 15 miles north to the park junction. Do not follow the signs to the park, but continue north on County 5 through Side Lake to Co 501 (Ski Trail Road) about 1 mile north of Side Lake. Left on 501 about a mile to start point. Directions From the Twin Cities (about 215 miles, just over 4 hours): I35 North to MN73 at Moose Lake. MN73 north to St. Louis Co 5, about 5 miles north of Hibbing. Co 5 through Side Lake to Co 501 (Ski Trail Road) about 1 mile north of Side Lake. Left on 501 about a mile to start point. From McCarthyBeach State Park Camping Area(4 miles, about 10 minutes) Exit camping area near Park ofice onto St. Lous County 65. Turn south, then east on 65 to County 5 at Side Lake. North on county 5 to through Side Lake to Co 501 (Ski Trail Road) about 1 mile north of Side Lake. Left on 501 about a mile to start point. From Scenic State Park (56 miles, about 1 hour, 15 minutes): Take Itaska County 7 west and north to MN 38 at Bigfork. MN38 North to MN 1 at Effie. Right (east) to MN 1 to MN 65 just before Togo. Right (south) on MN 65 to Itaska/St. Louis Co 22 to St. Louis Co 5. Right(south) on 5 until 1 mile north of Side Lake. Right(west) on Country 501 (Ski Trail Road) about a mile to start point. Both parks have maps for a shorter dirt road option between the parks.
