There is a continuing debate over whether existing academic achievement and psychological assessment instruments provide adequate and accurate information in the assessment of culturally diverse populations. One question that becomes even more significant as we approach the next millennium is: Should culture be one of the central concerns in our development and utilization of standardized achievement and psychological assessment instruments? The answer to this question is necessarily complex and multi-layered.The historical under-emphasis of all but Euro-American culture in the development and utilization of standardized instruments must be challenged and the relevance of other cultural orientations must be better understood if they are to meaningfully inform our research and work with culturally diverse populations in the next millennium.
