Mentoring and Tutoring
Youth mentoring and tutoring is such an important part of what we do. Without this part of the Nidra King Center 's programs, we might not have as much success as we do with these kids.
Volunteers work with children one-on-one, however in some cases, the child is assigned to a "student" who tutors and mentors the child in one or more areas of difficulty. The student tutors benefit because when they are teaching another, they learn responsibility and accountability, as well as the fact that they often appear to gain a greater understanding and respect for their own teachers.
Volunteers work with the parents and teachers to prepare study plans for their nkckid, and this way, everyone working with the child is on the same page. This also aids in the accountability of the child, because he or she knows that everyone is taking an interest in them. Our experience has been that the child tries harder and isn't afraid to ask questions, thereby opens up to more learning than before.
Our mentors are also available in the case of a child who is more difficult to reach or respond. These children may be referred for testing for learning disabilities, coordinated by the school, and or counseling through the parents an appropriate referral agency.
