The Peterson Kids' Web Page
| Hi, we're the Peterson Kids. Our names are Michael, Michelle, and Crystal. Last summer, we all got our swimming awards for passing the swimming test and graduating to the big pool at North Commons. That means we got to go in the deep water and jump off the diving board. At first it was scary, but there's lifeguards there and they help you the first couple of times off the diving board. We had lots of fun last summer. This summer we get to go to North Commons again. The diving boards they have are really high. It's still scary. I can't believe I really jumped off of it (Michael said that). | A lot of us wish we had our own computers at
home. At our school, mostly the white kids get to use them, but not
the minority kids. That's not very fair to us because then we become
disadvantaged just one more way at school and it makes learning harder. The
Nidra King Center tries to make up for that, but the donated computers we
get are really old and a lot of them are broken when we get them. We live across the street from the center, so it's really close to get to. We wrote this page at the center, and then we had to learn about the codes that have to go in, and we practiced on paper until we got it right.

| Another thing we like to do besides swimming is to get on the computers at the center. We have to use the computers to help us with our lessons for school, but we also get to play games on them. Mostly the games are Commander Keen, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and stuff like that, but just before school started up again, somebody donated some really cool games like Street Fighter 2. The only thing I don't like is that usually in the summer there's too many kids and not enough computers. And another thing is that most of the computers that got donated were kind of old and need a lot of work done on them before we can use them. It was really hard when we started working on the internet stuff because the computers all needed work before the programs we needed could run. We still have that problem. One of the volunteers at the Nidra King Center sometimes takes the kids to her house to work on the web pages, but with so many kids at the center, it takes a while for everybody to get a chance to work on their page, so it goes slowly. | We went to Ms. J's house and she let us on
the internet where we were able to pick out some pictures and songs we wanted to
have on our page. Learning how to download stuff was loads of fun. We also learned about computer viruses and
stuff, and we got to see a program called McAfee check out the stuff we got off the internet. We didn't have any
viruses in anything we downloaded though, Ms. J was happy about that.
We got to see how our page would look once we finished it, and it looks a lot
better on the internet than it does on paper.
