Messin' in the Mess

The Navigator n' I on Hardtack Assembly Duty

Me? Make a mess for the Captain's Feast? Yarr! No problem. The Navigator and I have been on hardtack assembly duty for a little while as the Captain scrambles around the ship preparin' some festivities for Uncle John and Auntie Amy. They are passin' the point o' no return on Saturday - too late to turn back now, the bells be tollin'. I be findin' lots of nifty smellin' things in them tharr cupboards, but the Navigator won't let me sample 'em. Only hardtack for this sailor. Speakin' o' which, me ship's surgeon has me on some fishy foodstuffs now - sardines, anchovies n' salmon hardtack... I admit, I be likin' it a-plenty. Tasty morsels, they be.

Nothin' in me life be free, still. Lately, all has been a-workin', no playin'. Well, some playin' with me Buster Cube n' 101 fun things to do with a box, but even our daily expeditions on shore have been peppered with heelin' n' turns, n' about turns, n' lefts n' rights n' downs n' halts n' stays n' NoNoNoYeBlastedBilgeRatLeaveIts... Captain says I be ready to be promoted to Rally-O grade now, n' so I be studyin' hard for me big exam comin' up in the fall.

Workin' for me meal.

Grog self-service, yarr.

Livin' on board the ship has its advantages. I discovered the place where grog is stored n' while the Captain was busy workin', I helped meself to a bottle. She caught me red-pawed again (durn!) but at least she didn't seem too upset I had found her secret stash. Someday, I'll be able to work that there opener contraption n' serve meself a cup. Soon as I grow opposable thumbs. Workin' on it.

It's been a good week at sea - lots o' work, lots o' scrubbin', lots o' learnin'. I be ready for a visit from Auntie Rachel this weekend. She's on Watch duty while Auntie Amy and Uncle John "tie the knot". I be not certain what that means, tyin' the knot... I have tied me leashes in knots, sometimes. N' I have tied the Captain's stomach in knots when I got a bad case o' sea-sickness. N' I have tied me ropes in knots. Wonder if humans can tie each other in a knot?

I hope me Captain doesn't tie herself in a knot. That'd be awfully awkward for workin'.

Blow ye winds in the morning and blow ye winds hi ho, haul away the running gear and blow boys blow!

~Pirate, musically

P.S.: Part of me new job is also answerin' messages from all ye dogs out there who want some dog-to-dog advice. If ye need help pillaging, escapin', or foilin' ye people, drop me a message in a bottle, n' I'll get back to ye as soon as I can.
