virtual me

there's a lyric in the toad the wet sprocket song 'throw it all away' that goes:

with the time i waste on the life i never had

i could have turned myself into a better man

i think about this lyric a lot as i drift off to sleep after having spent the night evercracking away or leading a virtual life. while i'm not proud of all the time i spend in virtual worlds, this web site wouldn't be complete without paying homage to them.

3 & out

i'm not sure how i got wrangled into this, but i occassionally contribute random sports thoughts to the 3 & out sports blog created under the moniker 'freelancer'. the blog was created and is primarily maintained by my friend tim susman.

zoyna

everquest

the first two years that everquest existed, i mocked the game. then on a dare to myself i loaded it up and figured i would see what all the fuss was about. now over four years later i still enjoy playing. my main character is a level 75 rogue on the luclin server and a proud member of the heroes guild.

gran turismo 4

ever since a trip abroad in 1989, i'd been fascinated with germany's nurburgring race course. over 20km of pavement ribboning through the western german countryside. when gt4 came out and included not just the world famous nurburgring--a rarity in racing games--but also included the 1997 eagle talon as one of the drivable cars, i simply had to get it.

ncaa football 2005

one theory i have is that the quality of professional sports will continue to go down because kids will be more tempted to don virtual unis and play their sports on playstation instead of on the playground. well, call me a hypocrit 'cause virtual jim helped lead purdue to multiple ncaa football titles.here i(he) makes a catch across the middle against the minnesota golden gophers (pay no attention to the shadow errors)

second life

much like everquest, second life was something i had little interest in venturing into. but on the afternoon of january 1st 2007, sleep deprived from a new years in vegas and compounded by a poor night of sleep and a 5 hour drive home, i was ripe to be talked into trying it out. i can now be found there on a semi regular basis under the guise of entropy pau, an arctic fox who is a regular at the queen of hearts dance club in mystery.

tiger woods 2004

i'm really not very good at golf in real life. i've only ever gotten one birdie, and that was the organic variety (i hit a dove that was sitting a few yards away from the tee-box). however, in tiger woods 2004 i can rip the course up! i especially like that tw2004 includes the princeville course in hawaii and has a fantastic player editor (though i think the virtual version of me looks more like my brother).

nascar3 (retired)

like much of the rest of america, ii caught nascar fever in the mid 90s and followed the sport passionately until ii grew bored with it a couple years ago (this not coincidentally was when my favorite driver lost his full time ride). papyrus's nascar franchise had a superb car editor and ii designed the sobe/amd monte carlo for online racing. turns out ii wasn't all that good and could only race on the tracks that didn't require breaking. the sobe/amd chevy spent a lot of time in the virtual body shop
