website related

+ from 1997 to 2007 my website remained largely unchanged, which means that while the rest of the world was putting up myspace and facebook pages, i was still entertaining my guests with godawful midi background music. you can see what the page used to look like by clicking here.

+ this drawing by jimmy chin inspired me to replace the previous web page theme ('frozen fox', not 'wavy purple backgrounds') with 'pocketwatch fox

my peeps

+ during the spring and summer of 2007 a pair of finches took up residence in my bathroom window. i documented some of their activity, including two clutches of eggs and a total of six fledglings, on my web cam. to those who may have seen the pictures (or who saw them in the archive), and wondered what they were looking up, here is the set up.

+ i also took some video of the birds from time to time. most of it is too large to put on the web page, but ii wanted to get at least one sample up for your curiousity. here it is.

wolf park

+ like most other zoos and animal sanctuaries, wolf park in battleground, indiana offers an adoption/sponsorship program. in exchange for a moderate donation, participants receive seasonal updates on their adopted animal, some photos, and maybe even a fur sample from shedding season. what makes wolf park different is that, with advanced reservations, people can visit with their wolves. and by 'visit' i really mean 'visit'. after watching a safety video, people actually get to go into the enclosure with the wolf pack.

distributed computing

do you have the latest dual/quad core super computer sitting on your desk? does it spend 95% of the day processing email, displaying boring web pages like this, or flat out sitting idle? put your cpu(s) to good use by joining a distributed computing project or two. how it works: while your computer would otherwise be sitting idle, a program runs in the background to model weather systems, cancer fighting chemicals, and even monitor extra terrestrial communications. download the boinc client from berkeley and you will get started. here are the projects ii'm currently working on:

+SETI@home - listening to see if e.t. is calling us back after we helped him phone home

+climateprediction.net - models different

+ORBIT@home (not yet started) - assists in keeping track of potential planet-killing asteroids

+Rosetta@home - searches for 3-dimensional shapes to help fight disease

you're watership down!

by richard adams

though many think of you as a bit young, even childish, you're actually incredibly deep and complex. you show people the need to rethink their assumptions, and confront them on everything from how they think to where they build their houses. you might be one of the greatest people of all time. you'd be recognized as such if you weren't always talking about talking rabbits.
