Overview:
The Smashmouth is a mech designed to combat the Awesome.   In several tests, it has fared quite well, winning about 65-70% of the time.   With great firepower at all ranges, the Smashmouth should perform well in most situations.

Capabilities:
The paired PPC and LRM 20 combine to equal the Awesome's long range firepower, while the array of lasers   gives the Smashmouth withering close range firepower, something the Awesome lacks.   Even though the Awesome was designed to slug it out at long range, the Smashmouth matches it, especially since it carries more armor.   And if the Smashmouth comes upon an Awesome at close range, it can shred it quite easily.   In fact, the Smashmouth is a good match for most mechs of its size, and with support,   it can even hold its own against some Clan designs.

Battle History:
The Smashmouth has only fought in three battles so far in the invasion, and performed well in each, if not spectacularly.   Two were destroyed, but also destroyed more tonnage than they weighed.

Deployment
So far, DBX has only sold the Smashmouth to Kurita units for the invasion of Clan space.   It costs about 1/3 what a standard new tech Assault mech costs, and so is quite reasonable.   DBX plans to sell it to the Fed Com as well, but certain paperwork and licensing snags have slowed that process.   The Sword of Light regiments that own the Smashmouth have given it good reviews, especially since even after the LRM ammo runs out, it is still a formidable machine, especially in close.
